Advanced Diabetic retinopathy with uncontrolled blood sugar level ultimately leads to new blood vessel development with fibrous tissue growth in retina. These new vessels are fragile and prone to rupture and bleed and cause subhyloid haemorrhage or vitreous haemorrhage or both. Contraction of fibrous tissue may cause tractional retinal detachment. Both of these complications cause significant loss of vision calling for urgent vitreo-retinal surgical intervention to get some ambulatory vision.
